Abstract

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. The Diagnostic Statistical Manual of fifth edition, DSM-5, defines ADHD as disorder characterized by persistant inattention, and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity that interfer with functioning.
Raising a child with ADHD who exhibits impaired academic, social, and family functioning is very challenging and may cause psychological stress for caregivers. Although having some parenting stress is considered normal, caregivers who experience extreme levels of this burden may experience feelings of self-blame, inadequacy, depression, anxiety and an overall lower quality of life that may also affect the parent–child relationship and negatively impact parenting styles.
The current cross sectional study aimed at recognizing the extent of depressive and anxiety symptoms among the caregivers of children with ADHD.Also,it aimed to assess the caregiver burden experienced by the caregivers of children with ADHD .Finally, it aimed to recognize the effect of parenting styles on the previous variables among caregivers of children with ADHD .
This study included 60 caregivers for children diagnosed with ADHD randomly picked from all children diagnosed with ADHD presenting to child outpatient clinic at ElHadra hospital . 60 caregivers of apparently healthy children included for comparison, one main caregiver for each child. All caregivers are subjected to the following :

Complete history taking

Complete neurological examination

Beck depression Inventory (BDI)

Anxiety inventory(BAI)

Revised Parental authority questionnaire (PAQ-R)

Zarit Burden Interview Arabic Abridged version (ZBI-A)
Statistical analysis was done on the results and the study revealed the following:

Caregivers in both groups were mainly the mothers and the majority of caregivers of children with ADHD were predomintely housewives while the caregivers of healthy children were mostly working .
• The distribution of different subtypes of ADHD in children with ADHD where combined type prevailed (71,6%)
