Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of using English movie-based learning to improve second-year preparatory school students’ speaking performance and motivation to learn English. A quasi-experimental design was used to achieve the research objectives. 52 students were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental and the control ones. The experimental group students were trained in English movie-based learning to develop their speaking skills and motivation towards speaking in English. The content was based on the student’s book, New Hello. The control group students were taught the same content using the regular method of teaching. Instruments of the study included a pre-post speaking achievement test and a speaking motivation scale. Analysis of the data obtained by students using the t-test and the motivation scale revealed that the experimental group significantly surpassed the control group in the post-speaking performance on the test and the post-performance on the motivation scale. A discussion of these findings, recommendations and suggestions for further research are presented.
