Abstract

Despite decades of research into translation, the translator’s mind remains a mystery. Understanding the “black box” of the translator would elevate our understanding of the translation process as a whole, but the literature is yet to address this crucial issue. The present study attempts to address this gap by exploring the translation of Lord Byron’s Don Juan by Mohammed Enani, one of the most prolific translators of English literature to date. The study contributes to ‘process-oriented translation studies’ and enhances translation studies as an ‘interdiscipline’ by combining utilizing the tenets of psychoanalysis and stylistics. Using a qualitative, contrastive approach, Enani’s translation, the translated allusions in Don Juan are categorized according to the taxonomy of strategies proposed by Leppihalme (1997) to infer the broad translation approach. The psychological implications of this approach are then interpreted in terms of Transactional Analysis and cross-checked against Enani’s trilogy of autobiographies (1998, 2001, and 2002). The analysis reveals the most common translation tendencies in Enani’s text, which are then mapped to Leppihalme’s strategies, as well as Berne’s ego states, to paint a macroscopic image of the translator’s approach. Based on the resulting translator profile, a new model of translating allusions is proposed– one that extends the functionalist approach proposed by Reiss (1989) while taking into account the psycho-stylistic aspects of the translation process. The results of the study offer a blueprint for integrating psychology into translation studies. It also provides a practical pedagogical framework that could potentially improve decision-making in student translators.
