Abstract

Persuasion is the process of communicating a specific idea or opinion from one person to another person or to a specific audience. Persuasion is done by using several strategies in order to achieve the desired goals and achieve the required communication. This research aims to discover types of persuasive strategies used in the play of William Shakespeare “The Merchant of Venice” and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien “The Hobbit”, and to find the difference between the persuasive strategies used in the writings of William Shakespeare and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. In order to answer the questions of this research, the researcher selected (40 pages) of texts from the play and the novel. The analysis of the data for this research is based on a modified Connor and Upton (2004(. The texts were selected from the play and the novel and were read well, and all the persuasion strategies used by the two writers were extracted from the (40) texts of the play and the novel. Both writers, William Shakespeare and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, have used Logos strategy, which is the most widely used rationality strategy than the rest of the strategies. The persuasion strategies that used by the writer John Roland Tolkien were more used than those used by the writer William Shakespeare in his play. The reason for this may be due to the differences in the writing times of the play and the novel, as well as there is a difference in the values and qualities that exist in the play and the novel, where find the characteristics of wars, legends and imagination that made the writer need to use a lot of strategies in his writings in view of the multiplicity of aspects of the events contained in the novel, unlike the play “The Merchant of Venice”, which includes the qualities of love, friendship and loyalty. A difference in the writer’s use of strategies was found, so the different qualities that It has a role in the difference in the use of persuasion strategies between the play and the novel, which makes the writer’s use of persuasion strategies different in turn, so there is a difference in the use of persuasion strategies between the play and the novel.
