In general, this study attempted to reveal the culture of volunteer work among young people through field monitoring and analysis of the opinions of a sample of young volunteers in some civil society organizations, and in order to achieve its goals; The study relied on the descriptive analytical approach. The study also relied on more than one tool in collecting its data, as it relied mainly on the questionnaire as a tool for collecting data. The study also relied on observation in light of the opportunities to participate in the implementation of a number of volunteer programs and initiatives with the participation of a number of community institutions. Civilian in Dakahlia Governorate,In order to address the cognitive (epistemological) shortcomings in analyzing and interpreting the questionnaire results, we relied on focus discussion as another tool for collecting data, in order to explore a group of opinions/viewpoints on the topic of interest, and to explore the meaning of the questionnaire results that cannot be interpreted statistically.The fields of study were as follows:
- Geographical field: Implementing the field study in a number of civil society institutions in Dakahlia Governorate (Resala Association - Orman Association, Misr Al Khair Foundation, Red Crescent Society - Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction), which are among the institutions that actively participate in the development and social initiatives that are implemented within the scope of Dakahlia Governorate. - The human field: The study relied on a random sample of young volunteers in civil society organizations in Dakahlia Governorate, where the researcher built a questionnaire via the Google search engine (Google Forms) and distributed the link to a number of respondents in order to fill out the questionnaire. The researcher was able to collect 317 questionnaire forms. Suitable for analysis.At a later stage, after analyzing the results of the questionnaire, and in order to reach more accurate results, the researcher conducted a focus discussion with a number of (10) young volunteers from different social and institutional backgrounds to benefit from their opinions and experiences to enrich the field study.- Time domain: The data collection and analysis process took 7 months during the period from (October 2022 to April 2023).After completing the data collection, the researcher analyzed the outputs of the statistical analyzes based on various statistical methods (frequencies and percentages) with the help of analyzing and interpreting the results of the content analysis of the focus discussions, which helps in obtaining more objective and accurate answers to the study questions.
The study’s main findings are as follows:-Most of the families of the study sample 76.7% are not affiliated with any civil society institution, compared to 23.3% have affiliations with civil society institutions. In addition, 62.1% of the study sample families had contributions to voluntary community development initiatives, and 37.9% of the study sample families had no contributions to voluntary community service initiatives.-Notes that there is a different view of the study sample on the meaning of volunteerism where 24.3% of the study sample was found to link the meaning of volunteerism and religion where they perceive volunteerism as part of the teachings of religion, There are also 17.3% who see volunteerism as an act to help others without wanting to yield a material dividend. and 14.2% of the study sample considered that volunteerism means devoting time to efforts to participate in the development of society, While 11.7% of the study sample stated that volunteerism means participation and collaboration in order to provide better life opportunities for others (those in need), as 10.1% felt that volunteerism referred to the charitable work of the individual or institution, In the opinion of 9.1%, volunteerism means providing public service to people. And 7.9% of the study sample considered that volunteerism means making sacrifice and altruism for others, 5.4% of the study sample also stated other meanings of volunteerism, but it all shows that volunteerism is to contribute to projects or provide humanitarian and material assistance to certain groups in society such as orphans, the poor, the needy, and caring for the disabled and the disadvantaged in order to obtain God’s praise.
• The study revealed that the most important of these factors is getting paid and dressed by God 36.6% followed by new expertise and skills 14.5%, followed by enhanced affiliation for religion and homeland 11.6% and the desire to fill time in a positive manner 8.8%, followed by the desire for a future job 8.6% And also contributing to community service by 8.6%, as it turned out that there were 6.9% of the study sample that paid for volunteering was to get a symbolic paid job. In the latter, volunteerism was driven by a social status of 4.4% in society.-The results of the study revealed the multiple reasons for young people’s reluctance to participate in volunteerism, as follows: Family and professional commitments (37.5%), lack of a culture of volunteerism in society (18.6%), followed by a misunderstanding of the meaning of volunteerism and its limitation to donate money (15.5%), followed by lack of information on areas of volunteerism (12.3%), followed by unwillingness to take responsibility (11.7%), others stated (4.4%) other reasons for young people’s reluctance to participate in volunteerism such as the search for employment, the need to start a family, the lack of family encouragement for their children to participate in volunteerism, the lack of a clear vision of volunteerism and its relevance to young people, and the absence of media interest in voluntary initiatives and projects.•The results of the study indicated that approximately 99.4% believe that volunteerism promotes citizenship values. This has been demonstrated by a set of indicators of young volunteers’ adherence to the laws and regulations prevailing both in society at large and in the institution where volunteerism is practised, where it has been shown that there is a very strong relationship between the practice of volunteering and the adherence of young people to the regulations and laws and the results of the study revealed a correlation between the practice of volunteerism, the sacrifice of time and the effort to participate in nation-building and the development of society, 98.1% of the study sample reported that volunteerism made them spend time and effort to participate in the nation’s construction and development.•The results of the study revealed that volunteerism has a fundamental role to play in the process of strengthening relations among members of society According to the study’s findings, 94.6% of the sample study shows that their practice of volunteering has helped to strengthen their social relations in general. The results of the study also indicated that approximately 95.3% of the study sample consider that volunteerism contributes to building new relationships among members of society and the 97.5% ’s view that volunteerism contributes to the strengthening of relationships between the employees of the institution. The results of the study also confirmed that 99% of the sample believe that volunteerism makes them more positive in their social relationships with others.•The results of the study revealed young volunteers’ vision of the role of volunteerism in promoting a culture of tolerance among members of society in which 98.4% of the sample study considers that volunteerism promotes a culture of tolerance in society, The study also confirmed a very strong relationship between the practice of volunteering and the promotion of tolerance values among volunteer workers. 96.8% of the sample indicated that the practice of volunteering promotes tolerance among workers in volunteer institutions. The results of the study also revealed that 94.9% of respondents believe that volunteerism works to achieve harmony and understanding among members of society. According to 95.6% of the study sample, volunteerism requires the values of respect to prevail among leaders of volunteer institutions and volunteer workers, especially volunteers. The results of the study also indicate that 94.3% of the study participants consider that volunteerism works to establish a culture of diversity and acceptance of the other in society.•Volunteerism and Confidence Enhancement: The results of the study reported that 99.4% believe that their practice of volunteerism strengthened their self-confidence. 94.6% felt that volunteerism and its practice fostered trust in others. The results of the study also indicate that volunteerism promotes confidence in society. 93.7% reported that volunteerism strengthens their confidence in society. The results of the study also revealed that approximately 95.9% of the sample consider that volunteerism increases their confidence in the associations and institutions they volunteer. Also, 98.4% of the study sample indicated that there is a correlation between the practice of volunteering and the promotion of trust led by society and the state.Finally, the study presented the dimensions and actions of the proposed vision to promote a culture of volunteerism among young people in Egypt.
