Abstract

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat content diet in which carbohydrates are nearly eliminated so that the body has minimal dietary sources of glucose. Therefore, fatty acids become an obligatory source of cellular energy production by peripheral tissues and the brain.
Stressful events lead to structural and functional disturbances in brain regions responsible for memory, the change in humans’ emotional behavior, with increased risk for psychiatric disorders including mood and anxiety disorders. One of the factors that protect against stress is physical activity. Swimming as a type of exercise showed to reverse rodents’ chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) induced depression-like state.
Therefore, this study aimed to study the modulating effect of the ketogenic diet and exercise against the deleterious effect of the chronic unpredictable stress on adult hippocampal and dentate neuronal cells in adult male albino rat model.
The current study hypothesized that the combined effect of a ketogenic diet and exercise could protect against the deleterious effect of the CUS. The study was conducted on 42 adult male Wistar albino rats for 37 days. The animals were divided into seven groups as follows: Normal rats fed on normal palatable diet (NPD), KD, fed on ketogenic diet, normal rats underwent swimming exercise fed on NPD, Rat model of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) fed on NPD, Rat model of CUS fed on ketogenic diet, rat model of CUS exposed to swimming exercise and fed on NPD and rat combined model of CUS fed on the ketogenic diet and exposed to swimming exercise.
