Abstract

The present study aims to assess the effect of chicory and radish (roots and leaves) on impaired liver function of injected rats with Carbon Tetrachloride (CCL4). To achieve the aim of this study, the chemical composition and phenolic compounds were estimated. The obtained results showed that: Radish are considered as a good source of carbohydrate, protein, crude fiber, ash content, minerals (K, Fe and Zn), antioxidant content (Total phenols and flavonoids). 48 rats were weighed (200±10g) and divided into two main groups the frist main group (6 rats) was fed on basal diet, as negative control. The second main group (42 rats) fed on basal diet and were treated with CCL4 in paraffin oil 50% V/V (2ml/Kg. B.W) twice in a week for two weeks to induce hepatotoxicity. Then, the second main group were divided into seven subgroups (n = 6) according to the following: subgroups 1: fed on normal basal diet, as a (positive control group). Subgroups 2: fed on diet and 2 ml (day/rat) of radish leaves water extract. Subgroups 3: fed on diet and 2 ml (day/rat) of radish roots water extract. Subgroups 4: fed on diet and 2 ml (day/rat) of radish roots water extract. Subgroups 5: fed on diet containing (10%) radish roots powder. Subgroups 6: fed on diet containing (10%) radish roots powder. Subgroups 7: fed on diet containing (10%) radish leaves powder, respectively for 60 days. Serum liver enzymes, lipid profile, antioxidant liver enzymes (SOD and GSH.R) were determined and histopathological changes of liver tissues were examined and investigated, Also, phenolic compounds profile of (Radish and chicory). Antioxidant liver enzymes (SOD and GSH.R), were increased significantly in all treatment fed on Radish. The results revealed that, injected rats with CCL4 induced decrease in feed intake, BWG% and HDL-c, while organs weight / body weight%, serum (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-c, VLDL-c, ALT, AST and ALP) increased significantly, as compared to non-injected rats (negative control group).
