Abstract

Abstract
Technology for a lot of organizations is the asset used to face the competitive environment. In today’s world, technology has proven to be more and more effective for accomplishing our daily tasks. It has made life simpler, efficient and easier. Technologies that are directly related to travelers such as using mobile applications and Internet Booking Engines (IBE) should be continuously developed by airlines. as it is an important sales and marketing tool. It enables airlines to meet their customers’ expectations. The delay in developing the systems and application will have negative effects on the airline’s market share as it started with booking flights. Now, travelers can select their seats, buy the ancillary services like upgrading to a higher class or pay for the next seat to be empty. Passengers can issue their own boarding pass and self-tag their bags through IBE and mobile applications, which minimizes the time they spend at the airport with less hassle and inconvenience.
Systems and applications like the Robot, Smart Cabin Concept, Biometric Technology, Turbulence Awareness Platform, and the integration of systems and applications will enhance the passenger’s experience.

Introduction
Aerospace and Aviation is considered the most advanced and sophisticated industry based on technology and innovations. The development of this industry dates back to a long time ago, as the first imagination about aircraft was started by Wilbur and Orville Wright who had invented the first successful airplane on 17 December 1903. In fact, the modern world of aviation industry cannot ignore that the ancient Egyptians were pioneers in imitating the birds according to the 1898 mission that discovered the flying bird made by the ancient Egyptian in 200 BC inside a tomb in Sakkara area.
The ancient Egyptians managed to design the wooden model of an aircraft and they were inspired by birds. They developed this wooden model with the tail fin also in the shape of the wingspan, wingtip, and nose to be aerodynamical. (Childress, 2000)
Innovation and technology play an important role in developing the aviation industry. Successful airlines are investing, nowadays, in technology to attract more customers and make their brand associated with the latest commercial mobile applications and the airline Internet Booking Engine (IBE). This aims to simplify the process of making reservations, e-ticket, settling payments, online check-in, and issuing a Quick Respond (QR) boarding pass.
“My Seat” Bluetooth service guides passengers through the airport terminal to the gate. Also, for the passenger’s seat on the aircraft, and smooth procedures at the airports. This makes travelers have a seamless travel experience which saves money and effort.
In addition, technology has invaded other sectors such as safety system technology which is related to the manufacturers and airlines’ ongoing developing equipment. It provides an automated backup system in case of failure of any part of the aircraft. It also follows the international safety rules and regulations to minimize accidents, incidents and passengers’ injuries which are always the first priority for both travelers, and airlines.
In addition, there is the security systems technology, which is related to intelligence information collected, and security equipment at airports like gates and biometric data and items which are prohibited to carry on board like liquid, spray, metals. There are also other items which are not allowed on the belly of aircraft, cargo, and dangerous goods like lithium batteries to avoid terrorist attacks like 9/11 or aircraft hijack. Safety and security are considered among the main factors that affect travelers’ decisions to select the airline, as travelers will never use an airline with a bad safety and/or security record or reputation. That is why airlines are currently investing in safety systems and applications to attract more travelers (Ching-Fu & Shu-Chuan, 2013).
Due to the very high competition among airlines, technology and innovation are parts of an important strategy for airlines to reduce cost of operation and provide a reasonable airfare with a unique service to their passengers. The aim is to maintain their loyalty and achieve sustainable growth of revenue and number of passengers.
This research is based on four pillars:
- First, Commercial technology that will facilitate the travelers’ experience such as the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, Direct Data Solutions (DDS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), New Distribution Capability (NDC) and “My Seat” service.
- Second, Operation technology is used to make air transportation the safest mode of transportation including land and sea transportation, as well as becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly with lesser pollution than any other mode of transportation.
- Third, Service providers technology affects aircraft manufacturers, airports, Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP), Air Traffic Control (ATC), maintenance services companies, and Ground handlers.
- Fourth, Passengers’ services technology and facilities which the other 3 pillars are based upon aims to provide many commercial, operational, service providers’ systems and applications to facilitate the passengers flow at airports and on the airlines process which will enhance their image and increase number of passengers and will also have customers’ satisfaction.
