Abstract

On studying Heaney’s poetry, one notes that his poetry never remained the same. His poetry seems to have passed through different changes over time. In Heaney’s first collection that was published under the title Death of a Naturalist in 1966, he seems to be romantic in his attitude towards nature and life as a whole. Then, as he grows up and becomes mature enough, he turns out to be realistic. This is shown clearly from the treatment of his major themes namely; nature, time, love and death. Furthermore, due to the British colonialism, he began to look at things differently as his homeland was under the British rule. This thesis takes into account the development and change that took place in Heaney’s poetry throughout his career as a poet and his treatment of his major themes. It attempts to show how Heaney uses poetry as a tool with which he managed to dig more and more into many themes. As a poet, he felt greatly affected by his surroundings and the environment in which he lived. Another important theme that can be noticed in the poetry of Seamus Heaney is that of time. He shows that as time passes, the poet gets more knowledge and becomes more aware of the pitfalls of life. Then, he deals with the theme of love and tells us how different feelings can be translated into real actions. Finally, he does not forget the fact that death may come as a sudden event. He looks at death as a natural fact that cannot be escaped. Through identifying some of the themes handled by Heaney, we can see that Heaney’s poetry passed through different stages of development that makes it worth studying.
