Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the most prevalent Salmonella serovars among broiler and broiler breeder flocks in some poultry farms at El- Behira Governorate, Egypt and to determine the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of a developed S.Typhimurium-specific lateral flow LFI kits as a rapid screening tool. In the first part of the study a total of 360 samples were collected from 20 broiler chicken flocks (clocal swabs, gall bladder and caecum) and 8 broiler breeder flocks (ovaries, gall bladder and caecum) during the period from 2010 to 2013. These specimens were examined bacteriologically for Salmonella. A total of 40 Salmonella isolates were recovered from 176 broiler chicken samples (22.7%) and 33 from 184 broiler breeder samples (17.6%). The Salmonella serovars recovered from the broiler chickens were S. Enteritidis (22.5%), S. Kentucky (40%), S. Typhimurium (5%), S. Infantis (20%), S. Virchow (10%) and 1 untypable Salmonella isolate (2.5%). While those recovered from the broiler breeder samples included S. Enteritidis (18.2%), S. Kentucky (39.4%), S. Typhimurium (12.15%), S. Infantis (21.2%) and S. Virchow (9%). The second part of the study was performed to determine the diagnostic efficacy of a newly developed Salmonella LFI Kit. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the developed LFI Kit as compared to bacteriological examination were found to be 90.9%, 98.9% and 97.4%, respectively.
