Hyperlipidemia is the main risk factor for development and progress of cardiovascular disease. The direct relation between high lipid and mortality due to heart disease is well known. Herbs such as onion, garlic and ginger, as well as guggul resin attract special interest as herbal medicine because of their potential health benefits especially as antihyperlipidemic plants. Garden nasturtium was screened as antihyperlipidemic plant for the first time. Hyperlipidemia was induced by two methodsو acute hyperlipidemia was induced by single i.p. injection of Triton -X100, while chronic hyperlipidemia was developed by feeding rats on high fat diet for 5 weeks. Atorvastatin was used as reference standard. Garden nasturtium showed the best results as a promising antihyperlipidemic activity as it produced highly significant reduction in all lipid parameter. The promising antihyperlipidemic activity was directly linked to their main bioactive ingredients isoquercetin as indicated by LC/MS/MS analysis. Nasturtium that cultivated in Egypt only grew for few months in the year. Therefore, establishment of its tissue culture was carried out. In addition to a comparative study of its phenolic content and antioxidant activity with the naturally cultivated plant.
