Abstract

Understanding and practicing healthy behaviors by a pregnant woman improves her health, achieves appropriate pregnancy outcomes, and improves the quality of life of the mother and infant. Aim: to evaluate the effect of educational program about childbirth preparation on primigravida women`s health behavior. Design: A quasi-experimental design (pre- and post-intervention) was applied. Setting: This study was carried out at antenatal care clinics in health care centers and the labor unit at DAR SAHET ELMAR`AA hospital in the Egypt healthcare authority in Port Said city. Sample: Purposive sample, the subjects consisted of 66 of primigravida women who attended the research setting were included in this study. Tools of data collection: Structured interview regarding women’s knowledge about the labor process and childbirth preparation; A Health Behavior Inventory; and An observation checklist addressing intrapartum health behavior for women with normal labor were used for data collection. Results: women’s ages ranged from 25- 35 years. There was a high reported satisfactory knowledge level for women (75.8%) of childbirth preparation in post-intervention than the pre-intervention (18.2%). In addition, the studied women demonstrated a significantly higher level of health behaviors during childbirth preparation (P < 0.001), with a reportedly high level (87.9%) of health behaviors regarding childbirth preparation in post-intervention than in the pre-intervention (13.6%). Conclusion: Educational classes that have a positive effect on a primigravida woman’s knowledge, and health behaviors regarding childbirth preparation.
