Abstract

Background: Many women with female sexual dysfunction are suffering in silence. Aim: to explore the lived experience of married women who have female sexual dysfunction. Methods: A qualitative descriptive phenomenological design was used for this study. Sample: Purposive samples of 12 women were included in this study. Setting: The current study was conducted at Cairo University hospitals. Tools: Three tools were used to collect the study data; female personal data questionnaire, Arabic female sexual function index, and lived experience of married women having female sexual dysfunction using semi- structured interview. Results: The participants{u2019} age ranged from 26-40 years with; age range at marriage was 22-35 years. The duration of marriage ranged from one year and six month to seventeen years, seventy five percent had received university education; seventy five percent were clerical worker. Also, ninety one point seven percent of the participants were multiparous; fifty percent of them had delivered vaginally, ninety one point seven percent used different methods of contraception. Eight major themes emerged from participants{u2019} experience of sexual complaints, expressing meaning of sexuality, cultural norms, social and interpersonal stressors, communication, mutual relation, impact of female sexual dysfunction on different life aspects, and seeking-help and advice. Conclusion: female sexual dysfunction was prevalent among those working women. The participants of this study, complained of several sexual problems and lack of satisfaction among them was the most mentioned complaints. All the study participants believed that their sexual complaints had affected negatively on their biopsychosocial aspects of their life. Recommendation: Further studies using qualitative approach must be conducted to provide a clear picture of Egyptian women{u2019}s experience of having female sexual dysfunction among working versus non- working women
