Abstract

The present research evaluated the incidence of postoperative fistula in patients with isolated cleft palate using two techniques of palatal repair. Thirty-two patients were included in the study, selected from the outpatient clinic of Department of Plastic Pediatric Surgery, the Specialized Pediatric Hospital and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine-Cairo University. Patients have been divided into two equal groups. group one was two-flap palatoplasty and included sixteen patients, while group two was Furlow double-opposing z-plasty and included the other sixteen patients. Each patient with isolated cleft palate underwent single staged palatoplasty procedure. Postoperatively patients were followed up at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months for fistula development. The results showed statistically insignificant differences amongst both groups regarding the incidence of postoperative palatal fistula which was 0% in two-flap palatoplasty and 6.3% in Furlow double opposing z-plasty.The p-value was insignificant and measured 0.64.Statistical significant differences were not found amongst sex distribution and age at operation (9-12 m.)
