Abstract

The main objective for conducting this study was to evaluate the effect of PRF on wound healing; if it would decrease incidence of palatal fistula after surgical primary repair of cleft palate and to show if it had a noticeable role in minimization of the post-operative bleeding tendency. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients were divided equally; we prepared PRF for six of them ”the study group”. PRF was placed during surgical procedure using two flap palatoplasty between the nasal and the oral mucosa. Then, the patients were followed up for six months to evaluate its efficacy in wound healing by monitoring incidence of fistula. All cases in the study group showed complete healing with no fistula or wound dehiscence all over the follow up period. Results: On the other hand, in the other group ”control group” in which we did not prepare PRF, one case showed wound dehiscence rather than fistula development. However, post-operative healing between the two groups was statistically insignificant. We owe it to small number of population in this trial. Further studies should be done on a wider scale. Regarding postoperative bleeding, amount of blood loss was not statistically significant either; this could rely on the injection of vasoconstrictor before incision and also dependent on the extension of the surgical field
