Abstract

This study is one of the most important topics in the ancient Egyptian civilization, as it focuses on the use of psychological dimension to influence the morale of the enemies and destroy their ability to fight or resist.
Most of theses that dealt with wars of ancient Egypt focused on the historical aspect of these wars and the practical confrontation in the battles (as the researcher will explain in the first chapter), but they did not refer to the psychological dimension and its impact on people’s morale, positively or negatively. Therefore, this study is an important step in clarifying the role of the psychological factor in battles, it will indicate how the ancient Egyptians used psychological warfare as a means of military tactic and to what extent their kings relied on it and used it alongside their struggle against their enemies.
Objectives of the study
This study is an attempt to:
 Survey the most known military campaigns in the New Kingdom.
 Specify the results of the campaigns.
 Examine the characteristic features of the campaigns.
 Analyze the Egyptian imperialism and strategy of ruling in Asia, Nubia, and Libya.
 Specify the target of psychological warfare.
 Explain the use of strategy of terror, propaganda and degrading imagery to intimidate enemies and belittle their ability.
 Describe the divine support that the pharaohs sought in their campaigns.
 Explain the various methods used by the pharaohs to support and motivate their own army, and raise their morale.
The researcher chose the period of the New Kingdom as the focus of the study; as the New Kingdom (1550-1069 BC) was Egypt’s imperial age, it provides a wealth of information describing the military activity, particularly the two well documented campaigns, the battle of Megiddo by Tuthmosis III and the battle of Kadesh by Ramesses II .
Research argument and Methodology
Psychological warfare is considered one of the fourth generation wars in the modern period, so many people believed that it follows and depends on the modern civilization and does not have any roots in the ancient Egyptian civilization.
The researcher assumes that the ancient Egyptians knew and used psychological warfare during their struggle in the New Kingdom, and that they could protect their own armies from counter psychological warfare.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher followed the historical methodology which deals with examining the military and private inscriptions and reliefs of the New Kingdom to specify the message that the pharaohs wanted to send.
