Abstract

ABSTRACT
The current thesis aims to apply the Remote Sensing data and GIS
techniques for study the geomorphological, hydrogeological and the
environmental settings upon Helwan-Atfih area. To achieve this aim,
Multiple satellite data, topographical, hydrogeological and field data
were used. The study area is a part of the Eastern Desert dry lands of
Egypt and is characterized by agricultural activity, industrial activity,
surface water system and groundwater aquifers and multiple drainage
basins that are draining toward the River Nile. Lithostratigraphically,
the area comprises of a sedimentary succession belonging to Tertiary
to Quaternary age that are affected by faulting and joints, where the
NW-SE and E-W are the dominant directional trends of faults and of
the extracted lineaments. The morphometric analysis is achieved to
ten watershed basins and 27 morphometric parameters are estimated
and their results indicate that they have moderate to high flood
hazard. The estimated surface runoff volume (Qv) ranges between
2.42×106 m3
and 12.08×106 m3
for a single event of 41.9 mm. The
Groundwater is available through the Quaternary and the Pliocene
aquifers with a general groundwater flow towards the River Nile at
the west. The groundwater geochemistry reveals that the groundwater
is affected by anthropogenic activities. The evaluation of
groundwater quality shows that the groundwater of the aquifers in the
study area are unsuitable for domestic, laundry and drinking
purposes, whereas it is suitable for irrigation with different levels.
The flood risk assessment using Arc-GIS Weighted Overlay method
show that wadi Al-Reshrash is the most prone basin to flooding. The
waterlogging problem is affected generally by five factors, which areII
weighted with each other using Arc-GIS Weighted Overlay to assess
this problem within the study area.
