Abstract

In terms of the importance of energy to Egypt, because of the rapid increase in population and importance of technology. Accordingly, solar pond technique was adopted. Solar pond technique has advantages such as can provide thermal water for industrial or agricultural processes, desalination, building heating, cooling, and generating electricity for thermal water. Accordingly, this research was commenced with the impartial of assessing the solar pond technique, as a source of renewable energy in order to rely on them as an unconventional water resource, where Qaroun Lake was taken as a case study. The main objectives of this research are evaluating solar pond technique as a source of renewable energy, investigating of solar pond technique under local temperature and climate conditions, and Investigating the potential of the solar pond technique as a source for providing renewable energy to support the remote fragile societies.
In order to achieve the research objectives, a methodology was planned to encompass 6 investigations (i.e. Theoretical, Field, Experimental, Numerical, Analytical and Inferential).
During the “Theoretical Investigation”, many articles and researches in the field of Solar Ponds (SPs) were accumulated; scrutinized; categorized and presented.
Throughout the “Field Investigation”, field study and measurements were conducted. In addition, data assembly was achieved and the data were processed in order to perceive a complete data picture about the study area.
All through “Experimental Investigation”, a master Pond was constructed for the sake of the present study, where the geo-membrane color was varied and its thickness was altered. In addition, the implemented materials were tested and sampling was carried out and analyzed in the laboratory.
In the “Numerical Investigation”, simulations were carried out to mimic the constructed pond.
Throughout the “Analytical Investigation”, an analysis was achieved to the measurements to assess the experimental and the numerical results.
During the “Inferential Investigation”, conclusions were drawn and recommendations for Engineering Practice and future research were suggested.
The research designated that solar ponds possess high potential in arid and semi-arid climates similar to Fayoum governorate. In addition, the research flagged out that solar pond technique is utilized in many countries and acts as a backbone for sustainable development in arid and semi-arid zones. Furthermore, the research confirmed that solar ponds collect heat to be utilized in different applications (i.e. desalination, salt purification, electric power generation and fishing industries).
The main outputs of this study are Innovative about this research is prioritizing the implementation of a solar pond in many areas such as Al Wadi Al Jadid and south of Matrouh Governorate to ensure its efficient performance according maps using ArcGIS. Also from an experimental investigation of temperature performance for solar pond constructed under Egypt weather conditions in Fayoum can be get temperature of the storage zone in solar pond remained constant up to 70 °C indicating the system responds positively to weather variations and confirming the fundamental role of the salinity gradient as a thermal insulation layer.
