Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process with deposition of cholesterol in the wall of coronary arteries which leading to its stenosis and there is many factors leads to development of atherosclerosis as dyslipidemia and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) which deposit around coronary arteries, causing ischemic heart disease.
MSCT scan of the coronary arteries allows the evaluation of the degree of coronary stenosis, coronary plaque classification, coronary calcium scoring and epicardial fat volume estimation to help us in prediction of presence and severity of CAD.
study was conducted on 40 patients, 30 males and 10 females with mean age 56 ± 10.27 years who were referred to the MSCT coronary angiography unit in Nasr City Police hospital during the period from August 2018 to April 2019.
Results of this study showed that increased epicardial fat volume (EFV) was significantly associated with increased coronary atherosclerosis and significant coronary plaques.
Atherosclerosis risk factors including DM, HTN, BMI, LDL.C, HDL.C, total cholesterol, triglycerides were significantly associated with EFV.
Other atherosclerosis risk factors including family history and smoking were not significantly associated with EFV in this study.
