Abstract The current study provides a detailed description of the floristic features, ecological features and economic potentialities of three xerophytes species of family Zygophyllaceae namely, Fagonia arabica L., Fagonia cretica L. and Fagonia mollis Delile growing naturally in Western Mediterranean coast and inland desert (Cairo-Suez desert road, Wadi Hagoul) and, it aims at the following objectives:1- Recogniton of the habitat type of the selected species of family Zygophyllaceae in the in Western Mediterranean coast and inland desert (Cairo-Suez desert road, Wadi Hagoul). 2- Study the floristic features including: record of species, life-span, life-form spectra and floristic categories of the species in the study area to detect the taxonomic and phytogeographical significance of its floristic components.3- Quantitative analysis of vegetation structure of the communities associated with the selected species in the habitat type in terms of spatial variations in abundance using multivariate analysis (classification and ordination).4- Analysis of variation in the environmental factors (edaphic) to determine the soil factors controlling the abundance and distribution of the recognized communities in the study area.5- Evaluation of the economic potentialities of the selected three xerophytes species of family Zygophyllaceae growing naturally in the study area by studying: phytochemical analysis, allelopathic potentiality, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The area chosen for the present study is located in the Western Mediterranean coast (Western Alexandria) and inland desert (Cairo-Suez desert road, Wadi Hagoul). The natural plant wealth of this area was composed of 122 species belonging to 98 genera and related to 28 families. Out of these families, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Fabaceae, Brassicaceae and Zygophyllaceae are considered the major families as they contribute collectively about 63.95% of the total recorded species. |
