Abstract
The recognition of AKI, using serum creatinine, often occurs hours to days after the initial insult hence the need for a recent specific marker that can detect a significant renal injury in earlier stages.
RIFLE criteria represent a simple tool for the detection and classification of AKI and for correlation with clinical outcomes.
The AKIN criteria do not materially improve the sensitivity, robustness and predictive ability of the definition and classification of AKI.
