المستخلص

The word ‛autism’ derives from the Greek word ‛autos’ which means self. Autism is life long neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, restricted and repetitive behavior all exhibited before a child is three years old. It is one of five disorders coming under the umbrella of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) which is a category of neurological disorders characterized by severe and pervasive developmental impairment. The rise in the number of persons with autism in United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Japan, is described as “epidemic”. Approximately, one in every 150 child in United States has autism. Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries and is four times more prevalent in boys than girls.
