Abstract

Cancer is a life-threatening illness that can profoundly affect children and their families. Childhood cancer is one of the main causes of death during childhood, and influences millions of people worldwide and has impact both; financially and personally to nations, families and individuals. Cancer causes are unknown but there are interacting primary factors which influence the development of cancer, immune-suppressive, congenital malformation with chromosome anil cytoxic drugs. Childhood malignancy can be manifested by hematological and systemic manifestations. I he treatment of cancer in children can include chemotherapy, radiotherapy an 1 surgery. The type of treatment needed depends on the type and severity of cane.:r and the child’s age. Children wiih cancer may experience medical and physical, psychological, cognitive and ueuropsychological effects. Children with cancer were found to have significant emotional problems such as sadness, fear, anxiety and depression. Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It can be manifested by sleep problems, appetite changes, sadness, poor self-esteem and hopelessness. The children with malignant illness are a high risk for depression. Recognizing depression and making referrals are important nursing function, and nurses need to routinely evaluate the risk factors and symptoms of depression among children with cancer.
