Abstract

Biochemical bone turnover markers which reflect bone formation as well as bone resorption processes were evaluated for their usefulness in assessment of bone metabolism disturbances in Egyptian patients suffering from osteoporosis or bone cancer.
Bone formation markers, serum total alkaline phosphatase (T-ALP), Serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (B-ALP)and serum carboxy terminal propeptide of type I collagen (PICP), and bone resorption markers, serum tartarate-resistant acid phosphtase (Tr-ACP), urinary deoxypyridinoline (U-Dpd) and the amino terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (U-NTx) were measured in 31 postmenopausal women who classified according to their bone mineral density scores as evaluated by DEXA, to osteopenic group (n=10) and osteoporotic group (n=21), besides 14 premenopausal healthy women as controls. Also, bone turnover markers were measured in 51 bone cancer patients, of whom 17 patients had osteosarcoma and 34 had bone metastasis, besides 24 healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drown for these markers to compare their usefulness in detecting bone remodeling disturbances in postmenopausal osteoporosis and bone cancer.
