Abstract The pr~~ent werk includ~d fouLty on~ cance~ patients with b~~tHri~l, funqal and vir~l infections, and twelve apparently healthy l~dlvlduals a~ controls. The varlatian~ in the total and ditferential count5 were cb5erved. The mo~pholo9ical changes like toxic gr~nYlatiQn, cytopla~mlc vacuolation, ae~rea5ed nuclear lobulation, and OchlQ’S bodie~ ~re ev~lu~ted as degenerative index. Three cytochemical ~taIn5 {perOXidase, neutrophil alkaline phosphacase and nitrcblue tetr~zclium te5tl vera PQrformed to asses the neutrophilic function tests in cancer ~cl@nts with different types of infections. The following results were obtalned: !n canc~r patient5 with bacterlal infection, le~kocytosis (in 40\ of ca~e5), absolute neutrophIlia (in S5~ of cases) and lncreased degenerative index were detected. Normal le~kocytic count was obs~rved in 60\ of ca~e~. Thl~ could be due to the mild a~ localized type of infection or due to decreased n4tural resistance encounteIed in our casas as a result of th~ pre-existing malignancy. Altern~tiv~iy the bone marrow 6Jreserves might be exha~sted in these pa~ients~ so t~~t they were unable to produce the expected brisk re5panse encountered 10 normal subjects. Neutro~hilic functions tests showed increased activity in malignant case& with bacterial infection. Thu5. peroxidase, n.utra~hil alkaline phosphatase and nitroblue tetrazalium actlvttes were 51gnIElc~ntly Incre~sed·as compared to those of normal controls. In fungal (nfecte~ g~a~p, 50’ of ~ag~~ Bhowe~ severe leukopenia with abs~lute neutropenia, lymphocytopenia and mon~cytopenia. TheIr neutrophilic functIons tests showed c!creased activity. All the cases with fungal infection had ~ematopoietc ~lignancieB 14 cases had acute leukemias and 6 cases had non Hodgkin’3 lyuphoma). These findin~ might be secondary to the presence of high incidence of fun9~1 infection In lmnunocoDproml~ed ho~t. Tn virl infection, a significant decrease in absolute neutrophilic count, and siqnitlc4nt incre~s~ in the absolute lym~hQcytic CQqnt ~nd d~gen&rative in~ex. On the other han~, no signlflcant chanq~~ we~~ ~etected in total leUkocytIc count, neutrophil alkalin~ pho~phat8~e, peroxida8e and I~ducti~n by nltroblue tetrazollum. In th@ present ~tudy, the correlation between absolute neutrophilic count and neutrophilic function test was studied. !t waS noticeo t~at pezoKid~~e ~t~ln could be cQn5ide~ed as the mQ~t sensitive Indicato~ for various tYQe~ of Infectiorr~ In no~ leu~emic cancer patients. |
