Abstract

This study was conducted on 30 apparently healthy mothers and their newborn infants who were chosen from the Obestetric department, Ain Shams University. The ages of the mothers ranged between 28 & 35 years with a mean age of 28.8 years. The birth weight of the newborn infants ranged between 2.6 Kgs & 4.1 Kgs with a mean birth weight of 3.495 Kgs. All mothers and their newborn infants were subjected to full history taking, thorough clinical examination. Additionally, the newborn infants were subjected to assessment of gestational age and anthropometric measurements. Concentration of TGF-?1 in colostum samples from the 30 mothers were measured by ELISA. Meanwhile, levels of IgA in serum samples collected from the corresponding newborn infants at birth and at 1 month of age by Radial-immunodiffusion.

Results of the study revealed non significant differences regarding the mean levels of clinical and laboratory data among mothers below and above 30 years of age and among males and females.

Also, serum levels of IgA at one month of age as well as the rate of change of IgA levels were significantly positively correlated to levels of TGF-B1 in colostrum. However they showed non significant correlation with maternal age, gestational age, and birth weight.
