Abstract The diagnosis of the vertical relation between the teeth is of utmost importance as a step towards treatment planning. Open or deep bite may be caused by a combination of factors each of which should be corrected in order to overcome the discrepancy at hand. For this reason, it is important to correctly diagnose the condition and determine its exact causative factors. The present study was conducted on 60 Egyptian female patients who have undergone neither orthodontic treatment nor orthopedic treatment at any time. The 60 subjects were divided into three equal groups according to the vertical relation of the anterior teeth. The first group consisted of twenty cases with normal overbite, the second group consisted of twenty cases with deep overbite and the third comprised cases with open-bite. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability of certain measurements in diagnosing the vertical discrepancy and to find a correlation between these measurements. The measurements were divided into skeletal angular measurements, facial height ratios, alveolodental measurements and dental angular and linear measurements. The measurements were then tested for their reliability in diagnosing the condition and tests of correlation were done to find a correlation between them. For the deep bite, three significant measurements were found to be significantly different from the normal group. |
