Abstract

Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of its goals. It is a dynamic, interactive process that involves three dimensions: the leader, the follower and the situation. Head nurses to achieve goals. He/she needs to be aware of individual differences of nurses, task structure, situational variables and adjust his/her leadership style accordingly to attain goals. The style he/she provides influence nurses’ job satisfaction.
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between head nurses’ leadership style and nurses’ job satisfaction.
The study was carried out in nine inpatient units at Alexandria university student’s hospital. The subject of the study included all nurses in the previous mentioned units (N=120).
Tools of the study:
1- Multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) developed by Bass (1995) was used to determine head nurses’ leadership style as perceives by nurses.(81) It consists of 50 statements grouped under two leadership style: (A) The transformational leadership style (30 statements). (B) The transactional leader style (20statements). Responses of nurses were measured on 5-point likert scale ranged from 5(always) to 1(never).
2- Job satisfaction questionnaire developed by the researcher after a through review of literature (15, 46, 66, 70, 72, and 82) to measure nurses’ job satisfaction.
