Abstract

In the present study , seed Hordeum vulgare variety Giza 119 bicolor variety Giza 3 (millet) Ministry of Agriculture Egypt) w cultures under the glass house c I ofqrop two species , (barley) and Sorghum obtafned from the !re germinated in sand mditions at Tanta , Egypt, 50 pots (25 em. diameter and 30 cm. length) were dividedinto 2 lots , 25 pots each. The first lot was treated with CCC , while the other with 2,4-D . Each lot was in turn divided into five groups representing the control (0.0) and 4 different levels (5x10~,~ 5 x10’~ , 5x10~&~ 5 x100~M ) of each herbicide (CCC & 2,4-D) . Shoots of .I H. vulgare were sprayed with CCC and 2,4-D , after the 1 , 7 , 10 th , 12 -th and 14 3 week (from the seedling emergence) and those of -S. bicolor after the 1 st , 6 $& , 8 th , 10 -th and 12 -th week w i t h each level of the herbicide . These dates were corresponded to the seedling , preflowering , flowering , prefruiting and fruiting stages respectively . Results indicate that application of the 5x10~M ~C CC level stimulated shoot height and root depth of both -H, vulaare and 2. bicolor , but marked reduction occurred,with other levels . On the other hand , a11 levels of 2,$-D resulted in an increase in shoot height of g. vulgare , early at the seedling stage and in root depth , later a% the fruiting stage , but both growth parameters were reduced with 2,4-D aC the other stages . In S, bicolor shoot heLght and root depth increased only wi- tM h- 5x10- 2,4-D , while the 5x100~ M level was lethal , With the levels of CCC , the fresh and dry weights of .H-... vulaare shoots were decreased , but those of’roota increased . In -S. bicolor both weights increased in shoots and roots throughout growth . With different levels of *? 2,4-D the fresh and dry weights of H. vulaare shoots decreased , but those of roots increased at all powth stages , while in 2. bicolor both weights increased in either shoot or root .
