Abstract

Three s e r i e s of experiments were carried out a t the Agricultural Experiment Station a t Sakha, Kafr El- Sheikh, d u r i n g 1984 and 1985 seasons, t o study the effect of some c u l t u r a l practices on earliness measurements, yield and its components of some Egyptian cotton v a r i e t i e s . Part I: Effect of sowing p a t t e r n and N-rate: Two experiments were carried out t o study the effect of sowing p a t t e r n and N-rate on cotton e a r l i n e s s , yield and its components of the Egyptian cotton v a r i e t y Giza 77 i n 1984 and 1985. The experimental design was a s p l i t - p l o t with f o u r r e p l i c a t i o n s , where the main p l o t s were assigned to the four sowing patterns i-e., sowing on..ridges a t 20 and 10 cm between h i l l s and on contours a t the same two h i l l spacings. The three N r a t e s of 45, 90 and 135 kg/faddan were arranged a t random i n the sub-plots. Results can be summarized as follows: A-Earliness measurements: 1-Sowing cotton on contours a t e i t h e r 20 or 10 cm between hi118 delayed both first open flower and boll ,increased number of open bolls in one ruouth, percentage of b o l l setting and earliness percentage while decreased number of flowers up t o first open b o l l , d a i l y r a t e of flowering and shedding percentage as compared with those of ridge ones. However, percentage of open b o l l s i n one month d i d not affect by sowing pattern. 2- The intermediate N-rate (90 kg/faddan) caused a cons i d e r a b l e delay i n the appearance of first flower, increase of number of flowers up t o first open boll und d a i l y rate of floworiq with inuignifioant d i f f - erences i n 1984. While the highest N-rate increased s i g n i f i c a n t l y percentage of b o l l s e t t i n g and decreased shedding percentage i n 1985 only. On the other side, days t o first open b o l l , number of open b o l l s i n one month, percentage of open b o l l s in one month and earl i n e s s percentage d i d not a f f e c t by N-rate i n both seasons. 3- There are no s i g n i f i c a n t i n t e r a c t i o n s e f f e c t between sowing p a t t e r n and N-rate on e a r l i n e s s measurements studied herein i n both seasons.
