Abstract Oxidative damage and immune system alteration induced by Cigarette smoking in Egyptian smokers was investigated in the present work. The present study was assessed on 30 smokers and 10 non-smokers. The smokers were classified according to smoking index equation. Cigarette Smoking caused:-Decreased lymphocytes count and lymphocyte proliferation response to PHA.- Increased neutrophils count and phagocytic activity.-Decreased serum total IgG level and Increased serum C3 level-Increased serum total cholesterol and serum total triglycrides concentrations.-Decreased serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations.-Increased serum low density lipoprotein (LDL) and serum very low density lipoprotein (vLDL).-Increased RBCs lipid oeroxidation product (MDA) level.-Decreased RBCs glutation (GSH) level and RBCs glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity.-Decreased RBCs Super oxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase (CAT) activities.-Increased serum alanine amino transferase (ALT) and aspartare amino transferase (AST) activities.-Increased serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity.-Increased serum creatine kinase CK activity in group A.-Increased serum C reactive protein (CRP) level.-No DNA fragmentation isolated from whole blood.- Upregulation in the expression of HSP 70kDa. cigarette smoking has a harmful impact represented in the induction of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers and suppressing both cellular and humoral immunity. |
