Abstract The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of distraction osteogenesis on the treatment of class III malocclusion .The study comprised 10 patients with a mean age of 13.5 years suffering from class III malocclusion due to maxillary retrusion. All patients were nonsyndromic patients. All patients demonstrated a class III malocclusion with an inverse interincisal relationship (overjet, –2 ± 1.76 mm).The treatment objective was to gain space in the maxillary dental arch for the eruption or levelling of upper canines. All patients had negative overjet, and concave profile, hence distraction of anterior maxillary segments using custom-made was done in order to correct the profile and negative overjet without changing the position and intermaxillary relation of the posterior teeth and velopharyngeal competence. The distraction procedure was successfully accomplished in all patients. In all patients, the average maxillary advancement was 10.8 mm. Patients’ occlusal relationships and soft-tissue profiles were greatly improved after anterior segmental distraction. After an average follow-up period of 12 months, the maxillary position and occlusal relationship of all patients were stable, and no obvious relapses were seen. |
