Abstract
This study was carried out on 50 male Syiran hamsters divided into 4 groups 1,11 ,l11 and IV. Each included 10 animals, for G.l,lI and III, while 20 animals for group IV. The first control group, (I), animls were painted 3 times/day on the left pouches only, with normal saline solution for 6 weeks, whereas the right pouches served as a self control site. The second group (II), animals were given imuran 2 mg/kg body weight, diluted in distilled water, intragastrically daily for 6 weeks. The third group (Ill), animal’s, left pouches were painted with 0.1 % nicotine solution diluted in saline 3 times/day for 6 weeks. The fourth group animal left cheek pouches were painted with nicotine 0.1% solution for six weeks and then 10 animals were given intragastric imuran for 3 weeks only and the other 10 were given imuran intragastrically for 6 weeks.
After sacrification, at the end of each treatment regimen, no gross histopathologic differences were seen between groups 11,111, and IV, indicating that nicotine local irritating effect or metabolic biproductstothe surface epitheliuni in group III did not change much after the immunosuppressive state under which the animals were subjected to in group IV.
