Abstract

The present work aims to investigate the effects of vitamin D3 and its metabolites ,25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)2D3 on Calcium metabolism in rats .with alcohol- intoxicated livers
Male albino rats (Rattus rattus) weighing about 100 g were used as experimental animals. The animals were arranged in the following groups:
1. Control animals: i.m injected with 0.1 ml sesame
oil/kg/wk for one month.
ii . Ethanol treated animals: orally received ethanol (2g/kg/day) for three months.
iii. Ethanol + vitamin D3 or its metabolites treated animals:orally received ethanol 2 g/kg/day for two months then i.m. injected with vitamin D3 or its metabolites for another one month concomitant with the above dose of ethanol as follows:
a ) Ethanol+ vitamin D3 treated subgroup (200 I.U/kg/wk)
b) Ethanol + 25(OH) D3 treated subgroup (7ug/kg/wk).
c) Ethanol + 1,25(OH)2D3 treated subgroup (7ug/kg/wk
The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows:
Serum and liver total protein contents:
Administration of ethanol significantly decreased both serum and liver total protein contents. Treatment with vitamin D3 and its metabolites markedly reduced the extent of depletion in serum and liver total protein caused by ethanol.
