Abstract

Since the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, the reproductive health and its components has been defined in standard way for all countries as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing in relation to the reproductive system, and not merely absence of disease or disorder of reproductive process (WHO, 1994a and ICPD, 1994). The aim of the present research was to asses the knowledge and attitudes of Mansoura University students towards reproductive health and to give recommendation to improve reproductive knowledge . A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted upon a randomly selected sample of 1064 students in Mansoura University. The students were selected from three faculties: faculty of Agriculture, faculty of Arts and faculty of Specific Education. A questionnaire sheet was designed and included the following data: Personal data, Social data of the family and home, source of knowledge about reproductive health , knowledge about reproductive health and attitude toward reproductive health. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed and it was found that: Most students had good knowledge about reproductive health and its components. Regarding the relation of the residence of the studied students to the knowledge and attitude towards reproductive health, the urban students had significantly better knowledge and attitude toward reproductive health than rural students. Concerning the relation of the social standard of the studied students to the knowledge and attitude towards reproductive health, students of high social standard had better knowledge and attitude toward reproductive health than students of low social standard with highly significant differences. Regarding the relation of the gender of the studied students to the knowledge and attitude towards reproductive health, there were no significant differences between male and female. Regarding the relation of the type of the faculty (whether practical theoretical or mixed ) to the knowledge and attitude towards reproductive health, there were no significant differences between students of different faculties. As regard the source of knowledge about reproductive health, the T.V. was the most frequently reported source by the studied students.
