Abstract

The present study demonstrated the effect of the essential oils and metabolite extracts of twelve cultivated and wild plant species against different microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and yeast). The essential oils were prepared with steam distillation from different plants then tested for their antimicrobial activities. On the other hand, the plants were extracted with different solvents also examined for their antimicrobial activities at different degrees of pH. The results showed that the essential oils and metabolite extracts of Artemisia monosperma and Pulicaria incisa gave the highest antimicrobial activities against all tested microorganisms. The chemical composition of the essential oils of two plants were detected using the gas chromatography/ mass spectrum (GC/ MS) which showed that the two oils consist mainly from monoterpenes, phenolic compounds, acids and ketones. The biological effects of the essential oils and metabolite extracts of the two plants for the animals showed no toxicity occurred for the tested animals. The field study for the areas where the two plants are growing were examined including chemical and physical analysis of the soils. from this study there were no difference between the two areas (El Arish road and CairoSuez Desert).
