Abstract

Reactive oxygen species playa very important role in some physiological reactions in the body such as the catalytic oxidation of some endogenous compounds and xenobiotics (Bast et al., 1991). However, ROS have been proposed to be a major contributing factor in a variety of human diseases including male infertility (Gagnon et al., 1991). Donnelly et al., (1999) reported that 40% of infertile men have detectable concentrations of ROS in their semen, and Kolletis et al., (1991) reported that ROS are produced by the normal spermatozoa as well as abnormal spermatozoa. Zini et al., (1996) stated that ROS stimulate sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction. This work was conducted on 68 male (10 control and 58 infertile patients). They were divided into 6 infertile groups according to WHO, (1999) including: oligozoospermic (n=10), asthenozoospermic (n= 10), teratozoospermic (n= I 0), asthenoterato – zospermic (n= 1 0) oligoasthenoteratozoospermic (n= 10), and azoospermic (n=8) groups in addition to a control group (n= 10). All patients were subjected to thorough history taking, general and local examination. Semen samples were collected from the subjects by masturbation and subjected for laboratory analysis by conventional method of semen analysis (WHO, 1999), papanicolaou stain for all groups and sperm migration testing for control and asthenozoospermic groups.
