Abstract Regional anesthesia is an excellent alternative to general anesthesia for patients undergoing extremity surgery. Recently intravenous regional anesthesia (IVRA) has grown in popularity as a simple technique that can be easily administered. It is very easy, reliable and economic. It can be performed in the outpatient departments providing adequate analgesia with rapid recovery allowing early discharge. IVRA of the hand and forearm surgery has been suggested as a suitable technique for short procedure in outpatient clinics. IVRA avoid the exposure to the hazards of general anesthesia especially when general anesthesia is better avoided. lYRA also, decreases the pollution in operating theatres. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of new approach of IVRA by the addition of meperidine or fentanyl to a low dose of lidocaine and compare it with a relatively high dose of lidocaine, in order to obtain satisfactory anesthesia without possible toxicity when a relatively high dose of lidocaine is used. The study was carried out on thirty adult patients undergoing hand and forearm surgery at Emergency Hospital. |
