Abstract
At the beginning of twentieth century , Alois Alzheimer . escribed a 51 year old lady with dementia and senile plaques and eurofibrillary tangles at autopsy. AD is the most frequent of all egenerative diseases. It constitutes about 70% of all dementias , it’s higher prevalence lies in persons between the ages of 60 and 90 year, the disease is familial in 20% of cases. The topics of this essay supplement on AD have been selected highlight emerging and important issues concerning the risk factors, assessment , clinical feature, pathologic feature and treatt~ent of the disease. The neuronal loss in AD is mainly in the association areas of ;irontal , temporal and parietal cortices of both hemispheres. The ’two most distinctive histopathologic features are senile (neuritic) of amorphous material (amyloid) and a neurofibrillary : tangles. The cause of AD remains unknown ’but the recent demonstration that mutation in the amyloid precursor protein (APP) can result in familial AD, also AD is more frequent in patients with trisomy 21 Down’s syndrome , reduced immunoglobulins have been also incriminated, recently it was found that patients with AD.
