Abstract

Patients with tear film dysfunction had vague discomfort in the eye and may complain of excessive secretion in the eye (paradoxical complaints). The aim of this study is to detect the prevalence of dry eye. This study included 600 patients from patients attending the Ophthalmic Out patients Clinic of Mansoura University Hospital, there were 306 males and 294 females. The youngest patients 12 years and the oldest 77 years. The diagnosis of dry eye is aided by the four tests: Tear film break up time RUT.; schirmer test without and with anesthesia, and rose bengal stain. Prevalence of dry eye 44.08 % (529 eyes) positive to at least for one test. No. of eyes positive to RU.T. 29.5 % and its bilaterality 19.5 %. No. of eyes positive to rose bengal stain 21.5 % and its bilaterality 13.2 % and the No. of positive eyes to schirmer test with and without anesthesia 23.25 % and 12.0 % respectively and bilaterily 15.2 % and 6.0 % respectively. 100 eyes 8.33 % are positive to the three tests (B.D.T. plus rose bengal plus schinner with anesthesia). While 188 eyes are positive to B.D.T. plus rose bengal 15.66 %.
