Abstract In this study , a retrospective analysis was performed on 100 patients referred to Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Department, Mansoura University Hospital as having oesophageal carcinoma during the period between 1984 - 1994 inclusive in order to clarify the various clinical and epidemiological features of this neoplasm and to evaluate the different treatment modalities adopted to those patients in terms of local control, distant metastases and survival rates. The relative frequency incidence of oesophageal carcinoma in relation to GIT malignant tumours was 13.20/0 and to all malignant tumours was 1.20/0. Males were almost a double fold affected more than females with the peak age incidence between 60-70 years. The lower third was the most common site affected and constituted 60.40/0. Dysphagia was the commonest symptom at the time of diagnosis and was found in 1000/0. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histopathological type of oesophageal carcinoma and constituted 76.9% of all cases. |
