Abstract

In this work we have studied 102 young adult patients aged 15-45 ,years (53 males and 49 females) with recent CT or MRI proven cerebral stroke. These patients were divided into two groups: ischemic group (61 ”patients) and hemorrhagic group ( 41 patients). The hemorrhagic group included patients presented with intracerebral hematoma, intraventricular hemorrhage and those with subarachnoid hemorrhage. The present work was carried out to clarify the risk factors and the aetiologies which are responsible for strokes occurring in young Our results revealed that in ischemic group, females predominated (71 %) among patients under 35 years mainly due to the frequency of cerebral ischemia related to pregnancy and puerperium. But males outnumbered females (62%) among patients aged 35 to 45 years because of a higher prevalence of atherothrombotic disease. While in hemorrhagic stroke patients under 35 years, male to female ratio was 1: 1 but this ratio became 3:2 among patients aged 35-45 years. Many of the stroke risk factors were recorded in our studied group. Hypertension was present in 37.3% of our cases, cardiac diseases (36.3%), smoking (23.5%), hyperlipidemia (21.6), diabetes (19.6%), contraceptive pills (14.3% of female patients), hyperuricemia (13.7%), positive history for a previous stroke (7.8(%), transient ischemic attacks (6.9%) and high hematocrit value was recorded in 5. 9(~) of our studied group.
