Abstract Schistosomiasis is an endemic disease in Egypt in which the host immune response is mediated via antibodies as well as T-lymphocytes. The pathophysiologic events are regulated by subpopulations of T-lymphocyte subsets and interaction between helper and suppressor T-cells is evidenced. Cell mediated immunity is depressed as it is modulated by adherent cells and this is evidenced by diminished blastogenic responses of T-lymphocytes to both antigen and mitogen stimulation. Also, in autoimmune disorders T-suppressor cells are a major factor in the prevention of autoimmune reactions and depression in T -suppressor function leads to the appearance of autoimmune disorders. Parasites, on the other hand, act as a triggering agent in the breakdown of tolerance to self antigen and the appearance of autoimmune disorders. In the present work, the function of T -suppressor activity was studied and there was reduction in the function of T¬suppressor cells in bilharzial patients and in autoimmune patients and the function of this cell was much more suppresse. |
