Abstract
The aim of the present study was correlating the changes in serum gastrin with basal gastric acid output, enteroendocrine (Argyrophil) cells and histopathological changes in patient with bilharzial hepatic fibrosis The study included 20 patients having bilharzial hepatic fibrosis diagnosed on clinical, sonographic, laboratory and pathological basis and 10 control subjects. The patients were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination with the following investigations :- Liver function tests, complete blood picture, HBsAg, HCV antibodies abdominal ultrasound, upper endoscopy and biopsies were taken from the antral mucosa for histopathological and histochemical study. Estimation of free and total gastric acidity was done and assay of serum gastrin level * The following results were obtained :- - The liver was enlarged in three patients and shrunken in sixteen patients, there was past history of haematemsis and melena in eleven patients and twelve patients complained of dyspepsia.
