Abstract

Transthoracic needle biopsy has gained tremendous popularity in the diagnosis of lung shadows especially is being peripheral as it is safe, productive, usually an office procedure necessitating neither patient preparation nor specialized anaesthesia , almost painless, cost effective and with small risk of serious complications, so less reluctance to perform multiple biopsies when necessary. This study included (30) patients with peripheral pulmonary shadows for studying the efficacy of transthoracic needle biopsy in their diagnosis. Computed tomography was the imaging modality used for guiding the needle biopsy procedure as it has many advantages, can precisely defines the structures to be dealt with during needle positioning thus helps in planning a safe route for the needle, does not depend on the operator’s skill, not degraded by surgical dressings, ribs or lung, accurate determination of distance from the chest wall is available within millimeters, the position of the needle tip within the mass can easily be verified and filmed on repeated scans at the same level thus ensuring adequate sampling and give confidence for a negative or benign result.
