Abstract

Chronic ulcerative colitis (UC) is well established as a predisposing condition for the development of colorectal adenocarcinoma. In general the incidence of UC is highest in northern Europe and North America and lowest in Southern and eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and Japan. However the incidence in Egypt is much increasing in last few years which may be due to westernization of diet, stress of life (though it could not proved to be an etiologic factor) or the use of advanced tools of diagnosis of already pre-existing disease.
Neoplastic progression in patients with chronic UC is characterized by the development of epithelial dysplasia which is accompanied by genetic abnormalities that can be detected by flow cytometry.
The aim of this study was to evaluate patients with UC on the basis of clinical, endoscopic, histologic, laboratory and DNA flow cytometry, also identifying the role of DNA flow cytometry in follow up of patients with UC Furthermore to reduce the cost of surveillance by identifying patients who require frequent follow-up and those who do not.
This study was conducted on 50 patients of pathologically proved UC (36 male and 14 females) who attended to the Gastroenterology center, Mansoura University from March 1996 to September 1999 with mean age (34.6±13.4).
All patients were subjected to thorough history taking, full clinical assessment, laboratory investigations including, liver function tests complete blood picture, and acute phase reactants e.g ESR.
Radiological investigations including barium enema, abdominal Ultrasonography and plain X-ray abdomen. Colonoscopic examination for all patients for diagnosis and assessment of the extent and pattern of the disease and biopsy taking. Hisopathological examination and DNA flow cytometric studies were done for all patients.
