Abstract A large number of researches have exploded in the last two decades to show the importance of NO in living bodies. NO was shown to function as a relaxant neurotransmitter innervating nitroxidergic nerves in smooth muscles and blood vessels. Neuronal NOS was shown to exist in the smooth muscles of the lower urinary tract and pelvic blood vessels. Furthermore, central NO was shown to affect the cardiovascular function. We tried in our study to establish the exact physiological role of NO in these regions. We studied the possible occurrence of NO within the lower urinary tract and pelvic blood vessels. In addition, we analyzed the effect of i.c.v. injection of some NOdonors and inhibitors on the cardiovascular function of conscious rabbits. Our results support the view that NO plays an important role in the regulation of functions of the lower urinary tract of large mammals including monkeys. NO may contribute to the initiation of micturition that is however completed by other mediators of long halflife and this encourage the search for new nontraditional drugs for the treatment of urinary tract disorders. Also, we concluded that NO is important in the regulation of the blood pressure, and blood supply to organs in the lower urinary tract, which is essential in certain situations e.g. pregnancy and copulation that requires adequate blood supply. Finally, we found that Central nitroxidergic system slows the heart rate in rabbits via Larginine/NO pathway and through the facilitation of the vagal supply to the heart and this effect can be used for the management of some cardiac disorders. |
