Abstract

Fractures are serious complications after stroke; these fractures are probably caused by the development of hemiosteoporosis on affected side of the body and the high incidence of accidental falls. Objectives : To compare BMDs of the affected and unaffected limbs in stroke patients at multiple sites; to study the effect of 6 months rehabilitation program on BMD; and to relate BMDs to demographic, impairment and disability variables. Patients : 20 male adult patient suffering from old hemiplegia. The BMD of the unaffected side of hemiplegic patients was taken as a control for the same patient. Methods : All members of the study were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination. We assessed of muscle power using MI and TCT, muscle tone using MAS, Post stroke gait dysfunction using the MEFAP and the degree of handicap after stroke using the London handicap scale. Routine laboratory investigations were done. BMD of distal radius, femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae on the affected and unaffected side were measured by DEXA. A 6 months rehabilitation program 4 times weekly were performed for all the subjects.
