Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the root dentine microhardness after using Glycyrrhizin intracanal medicament in comparison with calcium hydroxide “Ca (OH) 2” medicament. Material and methods: Sixty single-rooted teeth were sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction level and root canals were prepared till apical size of #30. The prepared teeth were allocated into three groups (n=20): control group no medicament (control) group, Ca (OH)₂ group and glycyrrhizin group. After seven days, medicaments were removed using standardized volume of irrigation. All teeth underwent longitudinal sectioning in a bucco-lingual plane and were embedded in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin horizontally with their dentine surface exposed. Using Vickers microhardness tester with magnification of 100× and a load of 25 g for 10 seconds, microhardness assessment was performed. One-way ANOVA test followed by post-hoc Tukey’s test was utilized for inter- and intra-group comparisons. Significance of result was set at 0.05.Results: Both control and glycyrrhizin groups at the coronal and middle sections showed significantly greater microhardness compared to Ca (OH)2 group (P<.05), with no significant difference between the control and glycyrrhizin groups (P<.05). While no significant difference existed at the apical third (P<.05). In the control group, the microhardness at the coronal section was significantly greater compared to at apical section (P<.05), however no significance difference between middle and other sections (P<.05). In the glycyrrhizin group, both coronal and middle sections had significantly greater microhardness compared to apical section (P<.05), with no significant difference between both coronal and middle sections (P<.05). In the Ca (OH)2 group, there were no significant differences between different sections (P<.05). Conclusion: Under the limitations of the current study, glycyrrhizin didn’t reduce the root dentine microhardness in comparison with Ca (OH)2 at both coronal and middle sections and the apical section is not affected in either group.
