Abstract Background: Ssubstance use disorder is a disease that impacts not only the individual struggling with addiction but also the quality of life of their family members or caregivers. It can severely disrupt the entire family system, negatively affecting the emotional environment, identity, responsibilities, and relationships within the family. The disorder places numerous burdens on caregivers, compromising their safety and well-being. Objective: To assess the quality of life among caregivers of substance use disorder patients. Methods: This observational cross-sectional comparative study was conducted addiction unit, both inpatient and outpatient departments, at Okasha Institute for psychiatry and addiction, Ain Shams University, Egypt. Inpatient and outpatient. from July 2023 till end of recruitment by January 2024, it was estimated that sample size of at least 125 caregivers of substance use disorder patients were needed to detect. Results: The Current Study results showed that substance dependence affects the quality of life of caregivers, especially the caregivers of stimulant use disorder patients. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study and research questions, we can conclude that substance use disorder negatively impacts quality of life of caregiver in all aspects. Thus, as the caregiver burden increased, quality of life deterioratedWe also can suggest that stimulants use disorder has more impact compared to other substances on caregivers’ quality of life. However, further research is needed to support this finding. |
